The Nebula Awards define their categories by word count as follows:

• Novel: a work of 40,000 words or more
• Novella: a work of at least 17,500 words but under 40,000 words
• Novelette: a work of at least 7,500 words but under 17,500 words
• Short story: a work of under 7,500 words

Subcategories of the Short Story

• Short story: a work of at least 1000 words but under 7,500 words
• Short short story: a work of at least 500 words but under 1000 words
• Flash fiction: any work of less than 500 words
• Drabble: a work of flash fiction which is exactly 100 words
• Double drabble: a work of flash fiction which is exactly 200 words
