The Nebula Awards define their categories by word count as follows:
- Novel: a work of 40,000 words or more
- Novella: a work of at least 17,500 words but under 40,000 words
- Novelette: a work of at least 7,500 words but under 17,500 words
- Short story: a work of under 7,500 words

Subcategories of the Short Story
- Short story: a work of at least 1000 words but under 7,500 words
- Short short story: a work of at least 500 words but under 1000 words
- Flash fiction: any work of less than 500 words
- Drabble: a work of flash fiction which is exactly 100 words
- Double drabble: a work of flash fiction which is exactly 200 words
